1 in 3 British Users Abandon Websites After Experiencing Faults

July 12, 2012
by Jonathan Watkins

British internet users have been found to be rather unforgiving of faulty websites according to a study by 1&1 internet limited. Their research found that 38% of users have subsequently avoided logging into websites following faults on the website.

Amid the faults cited as deterring individuals away from websites were; online orders that freeze, websites down for maintenance and, according to 79% of users, slow running websites.

The survey conducted by Web hosting providers 1&1, which quizzed 1500 consumers, found that 71% of UK internet users are experiencing faulty websites on a regular basis.

Oliver Mauss, CEO 1&1 Internet Ltd offered his own views on the unreliability of websites, "Unreliable websites continue to reflect badly upon businesses of all types and sizes. It is clear that when faced with a faulty or off-line website, consumers will turn elsewhere," he said.

In comparison to results from five years ago, 44% of Britons have become more critical towards website errors, leading 1&1 to advice customers to choose a "fast and robust hosting provider."

With nearly one in three users opposing to return to faulty websites, Mauss admitted that ensuring websites are well run is of the highest importance. "Businesses must ensure their websites are well designed, have robust functionality, and benefit from the most reliable and high-speed web hosting infrastructure available to them," he stated.

72% of people have also abandoned a company for a competitor according to the survey, which has proved the importance of a fast-running website.

Internet Psychologist, Graham Jones, also gave his advice commenting; "Users of your web site are less likely to return if your site breaks or doesn’t work properly."

He concluded; "People get frustrated by slow loading and by the addition of technologies that work only in certain circumstances."
