International Rescue Committee (IRC) Chooses Managed Services and Infrastructure Company Datapipe to Manage IT Services

by Staff Writer

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) has chosen managed services and infrastructure company Datapipe to manage its IT services.

IRC is a charity which was founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein. It operates in around 40 countries and has a presence in 22 cities around the United States. The organization responds to humanitarian problems around the world and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives after they have occurred. The move allows IRC to focus on its core competency - humanitarian efforts.

"Our biggest concern was downtime, so any migration plans had to be handled carefully,” explained IRC's Director of Global Infrastructure, Michael Boeglin. “We’re not just dealing with migrating one office, but also remote locations backed by sometimes intermittent satellite link communications. Datapipe was the only one to guarantee minimal downtime throughout our upgrade — and they delivered."

The IRC’s IT infrastructure is enormous - 150 offices across the organization's global network. It manages 6,000 user mailboxes and users share files and logistical information through the system. The organization's upgrade saw them transition away from Microsoft Exchange Management and utilize Datapipe’s Exchange-as-a-Service as an alternative. It also saw the company establish a proper disaster recovery and power backup plan. Built on Microsoft Exchange, Datapipe’s Exchange-as-a-Service offers fully-managed administration services such as ongoing monitoring and technical support. It also provides support for diagnostics, problem resolution, migration, patching and upgrade management.

Datapipe, whose activities include cloud computing, infrastructure as a service, platform as a service, colocation and data centers, recently submitted IRC’s IT services to the Computerworld Honors Laureate award. The award is considered by 22 judges from a range of industries, who consider the humanitarian benefits of technology as it is applied to meet specific global needs. IRC was selected from in excess of 700 nominations from around the world.
